Professor Mujid Kazimi

Professor Mujid S. Kazimi
November 20, 1947 – July 1, 2015

In Memoriam: A Tribute to Mujid Kazimi

Arab-Americans and the Arab world have lost a preeminent and world-renowned scientist, scholar, educator, researcher, Palestinian patriot and Arab nationalist. Mujid Kazimi, the TEPCO Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) died of a heart attack while on a visit to China to participate in an international advisory committee.

Professor Kazimi was born in Jerusalem in 1947. His family sought refuge in Jordan after the ‘Nakba’ (catastrophe) of 1948. The young man did his elementary education in Kuwait, his secondary education in Palestine, and his undergraduate program in Nuclear Engineering in Egypt at the University of Alexandria. He used to say “I am the product of a mixed Arab educational system”. After graduating with a BSc in 1969, he attended MIT and received an MSc in 1971 and a PhD in 1973; both in nuclear engineering. Professor Kazimi joined the MIT faculty in 1976 in both the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE), where he served as Chairman from 1989 to 1997, and in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He remained at MIT for the remainder of his life.

The achievements of Professor Kazimi in his professional field place him in a category of his own. The current Chairman of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT described him in a commemoration issued by MIT’s News Office as “one of the world’s great nuclear engineers”. He added, Kazimi was “one of the world’s most distinguished educators and researchers in the field of Nuclear Technology. His outstanding scientific and engineering achievements are recognized around the world”. Professor Kazimi was a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and of the International Nuclear Energy Academy. In recognition of his accomplishments and stature, he was admitted to the National Academy of Engineering, which is the highest level that one can achieve in engineering. He also received several professional awards, including the Arab TAKREEM Award for Scientific and Technological Achievement in 2011. In addition to the important technological advances he made to his profession, one of his long lasting achievements was in the field of education; “… many of his students have gone on to faculty positions at universities worldwide, or to leadership positions in the nuclear energy field”, the Chairman of NSE said.

A recognized and widely respected luminary on the world scene, Professor Kazimi never lost sight of his Palestinian and Arab roots. During his student days, he was an active member of the MIT Arab Student Organization and served as its President from1971-1973. He continued to support the Organization throughout his tenure as a Professor at MIT. After his graduation from MIT, he joined several national Arab-American institutions. He was especially active in The Association of Arab-American University Graduates (AAUG) which had the largest membership of Arab academics and professionals outside the Arab world, and included other notable members such as Edward Said, Hisham Sharabi, Ibrahim Abu Lughod, Abdeen Jabara, Naseer Aruri, Elaine Hagopian, Hani Faris, John Makhoul, Hala Maksoud, Nadia Hijab, Ghada Talhami and many others. He served as its President twice, both in 1980 and 1987. By the turn of the millennium, the AAUG’s life had run its course and the Trans Arab Research Institute (TARI) was formed to continue the important work that the AAUG had initiated. Professor Kazimi became a member of the Board of Directors of TARI and continued his active involvement until his untimely death.

Professor Kazimi provided his scientific expertise to developmental problems in Arab countries while simultaneously encouraging the growth of science education there. Among the many posts he held, Professor Kazimi was a member of the Board of Trustees of Al Quds University in Jerusalem. A former student wrote in his commemoration of Professor Kazimi: “His attachment to the Arab and Palestinian identities, while leading one of the most successful nuclear engineering programs in the world, was simply inspiring. The story of a man born in Jerusalem during such difficult times and making it this far will always be a symbol that represents what it means to be Palestinian and what it means to be Arab”.

Professor Kazimi was one of the most internationally sought-after nuclear engineers. His work netted him many awards of recognition. He saw his work as serving humanity.  No matter the extraordinarily heavy demands of his professional work, he never abandoned what he felt was his commitment to improving the lives of Arab peoples.  He was Palestinian by birth, but his Arab-American organizational efforts encompassed all Arabs.  And his vision embraced justice and equality for all of the diverse peoples living in the Middle East.  He was a brilliant person and a great humanitarian, a role model for us all.

Mujid Kazimi is survived by his wife Nazik Denny; by his three children, daughter Yasmeen and sons Marwan and Omar; and by three grandchildren.

This Tribute was issued by the Board of Directors of Trans Arab Research Institute (TARI).
